“It Ends With Us” is a film that delves into the harrowing reality of domestic abuse. It is a poignant and raw portrayal of a topic too often shrouded in silence. The movie’s narrative is a stark reminder of the psychological scars left by such trauma. It’s commendable for bringing this issue to the forefront of cinematic storytelling.

The film follows the journey of Lilly Bloom, portrayed by Blake Lively. She grapples with the memories of her abusive past. She also deals with the complex emotions of being drawn back to her abusive husband, played by Justin Baldoni. The character’s internal conflict is a central theme. She navigates the treacherous waters of her psyche. She is torn between the past’s hold and the wish for a liberated future.

One particular line in the film poignantly highlights the societal tendency to turn a blind eye to domestic abuse. This sentiment resonates deeply with many people, including myself. I have seen the devastating effects of such violence firsthand. The flashback sequences depicting Lilly’s traumatic memories were especially challenging to watch. They served as a visceral reminder of my own experiences. I saw my mother suffer at the hands of my father. I faced his wrath when I tried to intervene.

The film’s exploration of why Lilly’s mother, played by Amy Morton, stayed with her abusive partner is a powerful narrative. It echoed my own mother’s resilience. It was a bittersweet portrayal that struck a chord with me. I recalled the moment my mother mustered the strength to leave my father. She made this decision only when we, the children, were older. Her intelligence and fortitude were a beacon of hope, mirroring the strength displayed by Lilly’s mother in the film.

“It Ends With Us” does not shy away from the complexities of its topic matter. Instead, it presents a nuanced look at the cyclical nature of abuse. It also examines the courage it takes to break free from it. It explores the path to start to forgive, if not forget. The film’s message is clear and impactful. It is possible for the next generation to escape the vicious cycle of abuse. This message is a vital one, offering a glimmer of hope to those who feel trapped in similar situations.

I am less sure of one of the film’s analogy about the oak tree. It suggests that people can be so strong that they can deal with and withstand abuse without help from others. Indeed, though voiced by the characters I don’t think that’s the message of the film. Rather, we need to recognize that ‘victims’ (I don’t like the term) are affected. We need to support each other.

“It Ends With Us” is a film that should be lauded for its unflinching honesty. It also contributes to the conversation about domestic abuse. It’s a difficult watch, no doubt. But it’s a necessary one. It potentially inspires change and offers solace to those who see their struggles reflected on the big screen. It is an important film.
